Health Information Act (HIA)

Overview

The physicians providing care at HealMaze act as custodians of health information under Alberta's Health Information Act (HIA). HealMaze Inc. supports the physicians' HIA obligations through operational, administrative, and technical arrangements. This page describes those obligations and how they are met in plain language.

Collection, use, and disclosure

We collect only the health information required to provide, plan, and coordinate your care, to process claims under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) for eligible insured physician services (and to bill for uninsured services where applicable), and to comply with legal obligations. Health information is used only for these purposes unless you consent otherwise or disclosure is permitted or required by law.

Storage and safeguards

Health information is stored on secure servers located in Canada. Access is restricted to authorized personnel who need it to provide your care. Information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and we conduct regular administrative, technical, and physical security reviews.

Information managers

Where we use third-party information managers to process or store health information, we do so only under written agreements that comply with the HIA and require the manager to meet the same privacy and security standards.

Your rights

Under the HIA you have the right to access your own health information, request corrections where information is inaccurate or incomplete, and file a complaint with our Privacy Officer or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.

Breach notification

If a privacy breach occurs, we follow HIA notification requirements , including notifying affected individuals and the Commissioner where required.
